Hungary to Abolish HUF 5,000 Chamber Fee for Businesses
Insights / Doing Business in Hungary / Company Formation
If you have never run a business in Hungary, you probably do not know about the annual HUF 5,000 chamber contribution.
And that is not surprising. It is not a major business cost. It does not change the decision to start a company in Hungary.
We are talking about only HUF 5,000 per year – around EUR 13.
Still, it is a good example of the small administrative obligations that businesses must know and remember.
Now, this small Hungarian business fee may finally disappear.
What is the HUF 5,000 chamber contribution?
Since 2012, businesses in Hungary have had to register with the chamber system and pay an annual HUF 5,000 chamber contribution.
But first: what is the chamber?
The Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MKIK) is a public body established by law. Its role includes supporting the development of the economy, helping to create a secure business environment and representing the common interests of businesses.
The Hungarian chamber system includes regional chambers of commerce and industry and the national chamber, the MKIK.
There is also an important detail that can be confusing for foreign business owners.
Mandatory chamber registration does not automatically mean chamber membership.
Chamber membership is generally voluntary. However, businesses covered by the relevant rules have been required to register and pay the annual HUF 5,000 contribution.
So, a Hungarian company could have this payment obligation even if it was not a voluntary member of the chamber.
For foreign founders, this was one of those small Hungarian rules that often appeared only when they started to deal with the practical details of running a company in Hungary.
The amount was never the main issue
HUF 5,000 is almost nothing compared with the annual costs of running a company.
The interesting part was not the amount.
It was another separate administrative obligation.
Running a business is not complicated only because of major legal or tax rules. Many smaller obligations also create administration. They can have their own deadlines, payments, registrations and procedures.
A Hungarian company already has to deal with its registered office, bank account, accounting, taxes, reporting and other legal requirements.
The chamber contribution was simply one more item to remember.
What is changing?
On 16 September 2026, the Hungarian Government announced that the mandatory annual HUF 5,000 chamber contribution would be abolished.
The Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MKIK) acknowledged the announcement and said that it was waiting for the details of the planned legislative changes.
This distinction is important from a legal point of view.
An announcement does not automatically end an existing legal obligation.
The relevant legislation must first be amended and enter into force. The new rules should also make clear when and how the current system will end.
For now, businesses should therefore not simply assume that the HUF 5,000 payment no longer applies.
The abolition has been announced. The detailed legal rules are still expected.
What does this mean for foreign business owners in Hungary?
Financially, very little.
From an administrative point of view, it means one less obligation.
When people compare countries for starting a business, they usually look at the big numbers: corporate tax, minimum share capital, salaries, accounting costs and company formation costs.
But foreign founders also have to understand many smaller local rules.
Some of these rules may not exist in their home country. Others may work very differently.
The annual chamber contribution was one of these small Hungarian details: almost irrelevant as a cost, but still part of the administration of running a business in Hungary.
One less rule to remember
Starting a company in another country means learning a new legal and administrative system.
The major rules are usually easy to identify. The smaller ones are often less visible.
The annual HUF 5,000 chamber contribution was one of them.
If the announced change becomes law, foreign and Hungarian businesses will soon have one less administrative obligation to remember.
And sometimes, making business easier starts exactly there.
This article is based on information available on 17 September 2026. At the time of writing, the detailed legislation on the abolition of the annual chamber contribution had not yet been published.
