Hungarian Citizenship – Requirements, Eligibility and Legal Paths

18/03/2026

Many people are interested in obtaining Hungarian citizenship, especially those who live in Hungary, have Hungarian family roots, or plan to stay in the European Union long term.

Hungarian citizenship can be acquired through several legal paths. The applicable procedure depends on the personal situation of the applicant and the legal basis of the application.

The most common ways to obtain Hungarian citizenship include naturalization after living in Hungary, simplified naturalization based on Hungarian ancestry, and reinstatement of citizenship for former Hungarian citizens.

Who Can Obtain Hungarian Citizenship?

Hungarian citizenship may arise in different ways under Hungarian law.

The most common situations are:

  • birth to a Hungarian parent

  • naturalization after living in Hungary for a certain period

  • simplified naturalization for persons with Hungarian ancestors

  • reinstatement of citizenship for former Hungarian citizens

The legal route always depends on the personal circumstances of the applicant.

Naturalization After Living in Hungary

The most traditional way to obtain Hungarian citizenship is naturalization after long-term residence in Hungary.

As a general rule, a foreign national may apply for naturalization if they:

  • have lived in Hungary for at least eight years,

  • have a clean criminal record,

  • have stable housing and livelihood in Hungary,

  • do not pose a risk to public order or national security,

  • and pass a basic constitutional knowledge exam in Hungarian (unless exempt).

This path usually applies to individuals who have built their life in Hungary and plan to remain in the country.

Preferential Naturalization

Hungarian law also provides certain preferential rules in specific situations.

For example, a shorter residence period may apply if the applicant:

  • is married to a Hungarian citizen

  • has a Hungarian citizen child

  • was born in Hungary

  • has refugee or stateless status

These situations may allow naturalization under more favorable conditions.

Simplified Naturalization Based on Hungarian Ancestry

One of the best-known options is simplified naturalization.

This procedure may be available to persons who:

  • can prove that one of their ancestors was a Hungarian citizen, or

  • can reasonably demonstrate Hungarian origin,

  • and have knowledge of the Hungarian language.

This option allows many people with Hungarian family roots to obtain Hungarian citizenship even if they live outside Hungary.

Reinstatement of Hungarian Citizenship

Former Hungarian citizens may also apply to regain Hungarian citizenship through reinstatement.

In these cases, the authorities generally examine whether the applicant:

  • has a clean criminal record

  • and does not pose a risk to public order or national security.

What Does Hungarian Citizenship Mean in Practice?

Obtaining Hungarian citizenship means that the person becomes a full Hungarian citizen and also an EU citizen.

This allows the individual to:

  • live and work freely in Hungary

  • travel and reside within the European Union

  • benefit from the rights of EU citizenship.

For many applicants, Hungarian citizenship therefore represents an important long-term personal or professional decision.

How Is the Application Submitted?

Applications for Hungarian citizenship must generally be submitted in person.

They may be filed at:

  • district government offices in Hungary

  • government service centers (kormányablak)

  • Hungarian consulates abroad

The final decision on naturalization is made by the President of Hungary.
